How To Get Into An Athletic Golf Posture

When it comes to golf posture, 99% of recreational golfers get this wrong while of course the 1% of golfers (who are probably professionals and great amateur players by the way) play consistent golf and enjoy the game.

Why is this?

It is because the 1% understand how their bodies must work to achieve a proper golf address. More importantly, they know what positions they need to be in every time they swing the club.

Let me tell you the real secret why you may be struggling with your golf posture without beating around the bush. It’s because you are sitting down for hours. Yes, I said it, because you are sitting down all the time, it is actually damaging your golf swing and your body for the long term.

This is why you skull the ball.

This is why you hit fat shots.

This is why you can buy all the latest golf equipment and swing programs, and still, don’t improve.

How is this so?

I’m going to get a bit technical so bear with me.

When you sit down in a chair, you are going into a position what is called anterior pelvic tilt which causes your lower back to be curved.

Because you’re sitting down all day if you work in an office, the pelvis is actually “trained” to be in that position.

When it comes to playing great golf, you don’t want your lower back to be curved. You want it to be straight!

You do this by doing the opposite, you want to go into posterior pelvic tilt by pushing your pelvis forward and having the hips working under you.

Here is a video of George Gankas helping a student get into the correct posture:

In addition, look at Jack Nicklaus, the most legendary golfer in the world.

Look at his back and tell me what you see.

That’s right, a straight lower back. Many of the old time golfers did this, which is why they didn’t need much golf instruction. They just learned the basics.

You should also notice Jack’s shoulders and how it is rounded. This is not because he has bad posture. Far from it. It’s actually because of the straight lower back and above all, it’s done on purpose.

This is not because he has bad posture. Far from it. It’s actually because of the straight lower back and above all, it’s done on purpose.

You see, you want to go from this posterior pelvic tilt to anterior pelvic tilt which helps with rotation through the ball which means increases in club head speed.

You are probably doing the opposite by going from anterior to posterior which leads to throwing the club and doing the dreaded goat humping.

Conclusion

So to get into a great athletic golf posture, push the pelvis forward.

To test it, maybe look into a mirror and place a club behind your back to see if your back is straight.

By practicing great posture for your golf swing, I believe this is the most important step that you should make if want to play consistent golf for many years to come.
